Speed up your PC. What to do when your computer slows down

We’ve all experienced this. Your computer just doesn’t seem to be as fast it used to be.

It responds very slowly to every action and it may take forever to open a program. Your internet has become extremely slow.
You may also get frequent system freezes and crashes and your PC becomes so slow it’s almost impossible to get any work done at all.
Sometimes these problems can be attributed to hardware failure and replacement or upgrade of the failed parts can be the cure. But most of these problems can be prevented or cured by understanding the causes and taking some simple precautions.

Get Rid of Malware

Sudden deterioration in the performance of your computer, frequent errors, pop up ads etc mean your PC is infected with some kind of Malware. A virus or Trojan, some spyware, adware or worm has got into your system.

Fight these malicious infections with antimalware tools. Antivirus and antispyware applications must be updated daily to keep your system safe, and schedule daily system scans to ensure your PC stays clean.
We also recommend you implement an efficient firewall to block all unwanted incoming traffic to your computer or network. If you are behind a router that is a good start. Most broadband routers have NAT (Network Address Translation). This hides your PC network behind a single public IP address and is an efficient simple firewall that stops most intrusions from the internet. But it is no help if you invite the malware in via an infected email as NAT does not stop outgoing packets of information.
Switch on the firewall that is included with your operating system or get a third party firewall solution, there are many hardware and software options available.

Disable or Uninstall Programs You Don’t Use

This is an obvious one. If you never use an application and are never likely to, get rid of it.
Many programs install bits of information all over your PC to enable them to run. Some of these are set to run at start up and if you have a lot of these you will notice the PC takes a long time to boot up.
You can disable these programs by using the Windows System Configuration Utility or a third-party startup program manager tool.
If you have a branded PC, then it is quite likely to be loaded with shareware software that you don’t need. Use the Add or Remove Programs utility or a good third-party program uninstaller to completely remove these programs from your system.

Clean Your Registry

The Windows registry is a database which stores settings and options for the operating system. It contains information for hardware and most non-operating system software and user settings. It provides a window into the operation of the kernal and is a frequent target for hackers, virus writers and malware,

As your PC gets older, the registry bloats up because it gets filled up with large amounts of unwanted information. A bloated registry not only generates errors but also slows down your PC. To avoid this clean your registry. A simple and efficient way to perform registry maintenance is by using a good registry cleaner tool.
