Antique Windmills Go About Their Daily Snuff Grind

“Most windmills today are used to generate electricity or pump water. But along the shores of a man-made lake in Rotterdam, two giants of antiquated machinery remain conscripted to their original purpose: pulverizing the fruits of the land for human consumption.”snuff_1b.jpg

Despite, or possibly because of, continued public health campaigns against smoking, the demand for snuff is on the rise.

Dried tobacco leaves are bundled up into ‘carrots’ weighing around 5 pounds. These are ‘sauced’ or marinated in a secret recipe of sweeteners and aromatic oils. This cured carrot of tobacco leaves is stored wrapped in linen for up to a year before being chopped and ground into nasal snuff.
Common “flavors” of nasal snuff include menthol, anise, chocolate and coffee, as well as fruit and floral scents.
